I had the honour of studying at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design in the early nineties. My outstanding memory of Boscombe Pier is of frantically paddling away from it face down on a borrowed surfboard. In my mind I was paddling for my life as the waves kept smashing me toward the rusty old pillars and gnarly woodwork. The water was so cold I was completely blue when I dragged myself onto the beach an hour later. Not once did I attempt to stand up.
If you want to learn to surf, I highly recommend Arugam Bay in Sri Lanka. Boscombe Pier isn’t without its charms though and a lot of money has been well spent along the seafront since my college days.
